José de Ribera, also known as Jusepe de Ribera, was a Spanish Baroque painter active mainly in Naples. Deeply influenced by Caravaggio’s legacy, he developed a painting of intense chiaroscuro, focused on the truth of bodies, popular faces, and the expression of suffering. His religious, mythological, and philosophical works rank among the most powerful of the 17th century.
