Academic Art comprises the styles promoted by European art academies from the 17th to 19th centuries. It imposed strict rules of composition and noble subjects — history, mythology, religion. Painters such as William Bouguereau embodied this ideal of technical and moral perfection. Long dominant, it was later challenged by Impressionists and Modernists.
