Edwin Landseer was a British painter and sculptor, a leading Victorian exponent of animal painting. He developed acute observation of behaviour and anatomy, supple modelling and material effects that make coats and gazes highly expressive. His works—whether Highland stags and dogs, sentimental scenes or the monumental lions of Trafalgar Square—are marked by dramatic staging and naturalistic virtuosity.
