Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch painter and printmaker regarded as one of the major forerunners of Impressionism. Living in France for much of his life, he developed a style highly sensitive to shifting light, reflections on water, and harbor or urban atmospheres. His views of rivers, ports, bridges, and cities had a deep influence on artists such as Claude Monet.
