Maurice-Quentin de La Tour was a French Rococo portraitist, a master of pastel who captured the faces of the Enlightenment. His velvety technique and acute psychological insight gave his sitters tender light and vibrant flesh tones. Notable works include "Madame de Pompadour" and "Voltaire", alongside numerous self-portraits. He became known as the "prince of pastellists".
